Scientific Approach
By basic scientific approach we investigate mechanisms underlying the development of obesity and the metabolic syndrome and, moreover, look for innovative strategies in terms of prevention and therapy.
Research focuses:
- Neuroenergetics & Energy turnover
- Endocrinology
- Behavior
- Appetite Control

Current Projects of the Germany Research Foundation (DFG)
With its sub-project B04 "Cerebral energy homeostasis and incentive salience of food" our section is a member of the Transregional Collaborative Research Centre (T-CRC) 134 "Ingestive Behaviour: Homeostasis and Reward", a consortium of the Universities of Lübeck, Cologne, and Hamburg, as well as a member of the Research Training Group 1957 "Adipocyte-Brain Crosstalk", sub-project 7.

Neuroenergetics
Overweight and obesity are characterized by a disturbed cerebral energy homeostasis. By means of 31P-magnetic resonance spectroscopy we are able to examine the brain's energy metabolism in humans non-invasively and without any exposure to radiation.
Thereby, we are one of very few research areas in Germany, which successfully established this methodology.

Cerebral Energy Content
Based on concepts such as "energy on demand" we work on the understanding of the role of the cerebral energy metabolism for complex metabolic processes in the entire organism.
Which impact does it exert on body weight regulation?
How far does the energy content of the brain affect our ingestive behavior?

Working as a team, using synergies, achieving goals together
We benefit from our interdisciplinary knowledge exchange. Scientists from the areas of medicine, nutrition sciences, psychology, and physics are working hand in hand. This cooperation enables us to develop unconventional and innovative solutions for complex challenges in obesity research.
